Uzbekistan’s Trade Policy Liberalization. Predicted Impact of WTO Accession on Chemical Industry Trade

This paper is dedicated to the recent reforms in Uzbekistan’s foreign trade policy and process of country’s accession World Trade Organization. It pays special attention chemical industry trade; with partial equilibrium model employed, expected changes imports chemicals, budget revenues consumer welfare are revealed. Two scenarios — mere tariff reduction or abolition country-specific discrimination practices considered. Results show that, former case, products will slightly increase decline; outcome latter case differs: grow considerably, whereas decrease. We conclude that negative effect be outweighed by creating a fairer, more competitive environment thanks removing such as import-specific excise taxes exemptions on import duty payments for state companies.
