Utilization of Sludge from African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) Recirculating Aquaculture Systems for Vermifiltration
نویسندگان
چکیده
Vermifiltration is a low-energy and low-cost option to reduce the environmental impact of aquaculture. A comparative study was performed for two different stocking densities epigeic worm Dendrobaena veneta (Michaelsen, 1890, Annelida: Oligochaeta), which were fed with sediment sludge from African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822), recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS). The intensive (I) extensive (E) stocked 15 10 g worm/L filter substrate, respectively, compared control (C) four weeks. total weight gain 9.4–13.5% 13.8–19.5% (E), low mortality rates 3.46–5.84% 3.57–5.19% (E). temperature inside vermifilters slightly higher than that in control, indicating favorable milieu microbial activity. worms supported pH buffering capacity systems, effluent reaching 7.10 ± 0.02 7.26 0.04 at end experiment while significantly (7.51 0.05). removal 68.02–98.84% (I), 71.85–98.67% 72.80–98.68% nitrogen bound (TNb); 82.77–96.64% 81.65–94.84% 77.79–94.74% organic carbon (TOC); 50.43–97.51% 50.89–96.84% 48.23–96.34% chemical oxygen demand (COD). By utilizing as feed, associated microbiota altered catfish sediments, removing loads, upgrading composition, reducing possible impacts.

Histopathological Effects of Glyphosate on Juvenile African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus)
Most aquatic herbicides have undergone some toxicity testing for effects on non-target aquatic organisms, little of this testing has been conducted on early life stages of Clarias gariepinus. African catfish C. gariepinus were exposed to acute concentrations of glyphosate for 96hrs. The lethal concentration (LC ) 5O value of glyphosate was 0.295 mg l for 96h of exposure. The mean mortality perc...
متن کاملInduction of triploidy with caffeine treatment in the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus)
Induction of triploidy is one of the biotechnological methods in aquaculture used for genetic manipulation. It refers to a state where organisms have three complete sets of chromosomes instead of two and can result in sterility. Caffeine treatment that is safe and inexpensive, serve to induce triploidy in catfish. To suppress the second meiotic division, fertilized eggs were exposed to three di...

متن کاملResponses of growth rates and growth hormone levels of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) to stocking density
In order to estimate responses of growth rate and growth hormone of Clarias gariepinus to stocking density, fish (initial weight 30.71 ± 0.89 g) were stocked in 120-L tanks at densities of 35, 65, 95, and 125 kg/m3 for 60 days. On day 30 and 60, the fish growth rates were measured, pituitary growth hormone (GH) mRNA levels and serum GH concentrations were examined by real-time qPCR and ELISA te...
متن کاملOptimization of Supercritical CO2 Extraction of Fish Oil from Viscera of African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus)
Fish oil was extracted from the viscera of African Catfish using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO(2)). A Central Composite Design of Response Surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the SC-CO(2) extraction parameters. The oil yield (Y) as response variable was executed against the four independent variables, namely pressure, temperature, flow rate and soaking time. The oil yield v...
