Using IR Thermography to Analyze the Mechanical Response of a Granular Material

The objective of the study is to analyze thermomechanical response a two-dimensional monodisperse granular system made thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) cylinders with elliptical cross-section. Cyclic confined compression tests were performed while an infrared (IR) camera measured temperature changes at surface cylinders. Thermoelastic coupling and mechanical dissipation distinguished in thermal evolution. former was mainly evidenced as consequence stress concentrations interparticle contact zones. latter highlighted specific contacts, which can be explained by strong friction these higher number applied cycles, rise accumulation heat due production. © 2021 Int.
