Using GIS and Geostatistical Techniques to Identify Neanderthal Campsites at archaeolevel Ob at Abric Romaní

چکیده

Abstract Although intra-site spatial approaches are considered a key factor when interpreting archaeological assemblages, these often based on descriptive, qualitative, and subjective observations. Currently, within the framework of research into taphonomy palimpsest dissection, several studies have begun to employ more quantitative objective techniques, implementing tools such as geostatistics geographic information system (GIS) methods. This is precisely approach that Abric Romaní team following. In this work, we present GIS methods applied faunal lithic assemblages from archaeolevel Ob, including an analysis structure, identification clusters sectors, size fabric analyses, projection vertical profiles, reconstruction digital elevation model paleosurface. The results obtained indicate clustered distribution, primarily concentrated four dense accumulations. predominance remains < 3 cm in length absence preferential orientations make it possible rule out generalised postdepositional movement affecting most site, although some local has been identified. horizontal analyses allow us identify accumulations single material (lithic or faunal) addition mixed faunal). Integrating all data with previous (zooarchaeological, refits, combustion structures, partial technological analyses), evaluate combine interpretations proposed previously using different approaches, thereby improving overall interpretation Ob. Finally, also develop preliminary comparison between Ob other levels at same site (in particular M P).

Neanderthal hunting strategies inferred from mortality profiles within the Abric Romaní sequence

Ungulate mortality profiles are commonly used to study Neanderthal subsistence strategies. To assess the hunting strategies used by Neanderthals, we studied the ages at death of the cervids and equids found in levels E, H, I, Ja, Jb, K, L and M of the Abric Romaní sequence. These levels date between 43.2 ± 1.1 ka BP (14C AMS) and 54.5 ± 1.7 ka BP (U-series). The degree of eruption and developme...

Using geostatistical and deterministic modelling to identify spatial variability of groundwater quality

The main portion of water demands of arid regions like Kashan Plain, Iran supply by groundwater wells. This research was conducted to assess the groundwater quality as well as modelling and mapping groundwater quality in the study area using geosatistics and deterministic techniques. Five water quality parameters, including Electrical Conductivity, Sodium Adsorption Ratio, Total Hardness, ...

Application of multivariate statistics and geostatistical techniques to identify the spatial variability of heavy metals in groundwater resources

The performance of geostatistical and spatial interpolation techniques for estimation of spatial variability of heavy metals and water quality mapping of groundwater resources in Ramiyan district (Golestan province- Iran) were investigated. 24 spring/well water samples were collected and the concentration of heavy metals (Ni, Co, Pb, Cd and Cu) was determined using Differential Pulse Polarograp...

Neanderthal cannibalism at Moula-Guercy, Ardèche, France.

The cave site of Moula-Guercy, 80 meters above the modern Rhone River, was occupied by Neanderthals approximately 100,000 years ago. Excavations since 1991 have yielded rich paleontological, paleobotanical, and archaeological assemblages, including parts of six Neanderthals. The Neanderthals are contemporary with stone tools and faunal remains in the same tightly controlled stratigraphic and sp...
