Using data assimilation to optimize pedotransfer functions using field-scale in situ soil moisture observations

چکیده

Abstract. Soil moisture predictions from land surface models are important in hydrological, ecological, and meteorological applications. In recent years, the availability of wide-area soil measurements has increased, but few studies have combined model-based with situ observations beyond point scale. Here we show that can markedly improve estimates Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES) model using field-scale data assimilation techniques. Rather than directly updating towards observed values, optimize constants underlying pedotransfer functions, which relate texture to JULES physics parameters. this way, generate a single set newly calibrated functions based on number sites different textures. We demonstrate calibrating function way improves at 16 sites, leading potential for better flood, drought, climate projections.

Pedotransfer functions for estimating soil moisture content using fractal parameters in Ardabil province

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Soil moisture curve is an important characteristic of soil and its measurement is necessary for determining soil available water content for plant, evapotranspiration and irrigation planning. Direct measurements of soil moisture coefficients are time-consuming and costly. But it is possible to estimate these characteristics from readily available soil propert...

Data Assimilation to Extract Soil Moisture Information from SMAP Observations

This study compares different methods to extract soil moisture information through the assimilation of Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) observations. Neural network (NN) and physically-based SMAP soil moisture retrievals were assimilated into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Catchment model over the contiguous United States for April 2015 to March 2017. By constructio...

Field-Scale Water Flow Simulations Using Ensembles of Pedotransfer Functions for Soil Water Retention

Using pedotransfer functions (PTF) to estimate soil hydraulic properties may be necessary in soil water flow simulations for large-scale projects or in pilot studies. The accuracy of a PTF outside of its development dataset is generally unknown. The existence of multiple models that are developed and tested in one region, but may perform relatively poorly in other regions, is also common in met...

Data Assimilation of Near-Surface In-Situ Soil Moisture Using the DSSAT Crop Model

Soil water is an important variable in agricultural environments as it contributes to yield response as well as areas of environmental concern including erosion, runoff, and nitrogen leaching (through deep drainage). Crop models have been established as a method for simulating agricultural production and examining ecosystem responses. However, because all crop models are based on limited system...
