Use of Seashell and Limestone Fillers in Metakaolin-Based Geopolymers for Masonry Mortars

Mortars intended for plastering and masonry works normally comply to EN 413-1 and/or ASTM C91 specifications. This paper seeks assess the suitability of geopolymers (GPs) composed metakaolin seashell wastes applications. The sodium hydroxide silicate activators contained air-entraining molecules secure about 10% ± 2% air content. Just like cement-based mortars, test results showed that mechanical properties GPs including compressive strength, flexural pull-off adhesion, water sorptivity decreased when concentration increased in mixture. was mainly related a dilution effect reduces aluminosilicate precursor content formation rigid bonds. replacement limestone filler by powder slightly properties, which attributed higher hardness densifies microstructure provides additional resistance support external stresses. Yet, grinding seashells into fine required energy than what is needed comminution clinker or limestone. use particularly advantageous applications, as it speeds up construction operations while eliminating hassle moist curing with plasters.
