Use of Formalin-Preserved Collections to Infer Trophic Indicators of Marine Zooplankton from Stable Isotopes

چکیده
Formalin preservation affects the stable isotope composition of zooplankton samples, thus limiting analysis valuable collections covering large time intervals. Here, we compare different procedures for correcting bias caused by formalin in δ13C and δ15N community samples. Zooplankton samples representative seasonal variations period 2000–2009 were collected off A Coruña (NW Spain). Part sample was immediately dried analysed δ13C, δ15N, elemental within 3 years collection. These values used as unpreserved reference. The remaining preserved 4% formaldehyde aliquots obtained after a ranging from to more than 10 storage originally Additionally, copepod fraction total biomass determined Corrections effects based on ordinary least squares regression had uncertainties, while mass balance corrections change C:N ratio (only possible δ13C) overestimated reference values. However, either simple mean difference between dry or complex generalised additive models considering seasonality, biomass, storage, produced estimations with relatively low uncertainty. Our results highlight importance determining specific correction solutions each collection before reconstructing series. Furthermore, uncertainties associated estimates can be sensitivity assess their potential impact interpretation

On the Use of Stable Isotopes in Trophic Ecology
Stable isotope analysis (SIA) has proven to be a useful tool in reconstructing diets, characterizing trophic relationships, elucidating patterns of resource allocation, and constructing food webs. Consequently, the number of studies using SIA in trophic ecology has increased exponentially over the past decade. Several subdisciplines have developed, including isotope mixing models, incorporation...
متن کاملQuantification of zooplankton trophic position in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre using stable nitrogen isotopes
We quantify the trophic positions of subtropical open-ocean zooplankton species using amino acid–specific (AA) stable nitrogen isotopic compositions. We model animal trophic position by computing trophic 15N enrichment of glutamic acid relative to phenylalanine, and find that trophic position for primary copepod consumers (Oithona spp., Neocalanus robustior) and secondary copepod consumers (Ple...

15 صفحه اولfrom linguistics to literature: a linguistic approach to the study of linguistic deviations in the turkish divan of shahriar
chapter i provides an overview of structural linguistics and touches upon the saussurean dichotomies with the final goal of exploring their relevance to the stylistic studies of literature. to provide evidence for the singificance of the study, chapter ii deals with the controversial issue of linguistics and literature, and presents opposing views which, at the same time, have been central to t...
15 صفحه اولStable isotopes can be used to infer the overwintering locations of prebreeding marine birds in the Canadian Arctic
Although assessments of winter carryover effects on fitness-related breeding parameters are vital for determining the links between environmental variation and fitness, direct methods of determining overwintering distributions (e.g., electronic tracking) can be expensive, limiting the number of individuals studied. Alternatively, stable isotope analysis in specific tissues can be used as an ind...
