Uptake of dietary amino acids into arterial blood during continuous enteral feeding in critically ill patients and healthy subjects

چکیده

BackgroundAmino acid availability is a regulatory factor of protein anabolism and partly dependent on enteral amino uptake. During continuous feeding, uptake may vary considerably, but this has not been documented systematically.MethodsIn pragmatic study, we investigated patients in the intensive care unit (n = 10) healthy adults 10). The time course essential concentrations arterial plasma dietary phenylalanine were recorded during 12 hours using 13C-labeled tracer.ResultsPlasma 13C-phenylalanine enrichment reached tentative steady state after no more than 4.5 h from start tracer infusion. There was large intra- inter-individual variability both cohorts. No periodicity could be detected temporal variation.ConclusionDuring acids shows variation. A eventually reached.Trial registrationRegistered at Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, trial ID ACTRN12616000593437. Amino systematically. In tracer. Plasma reached.

Enteral glutamine supplementation in critically ill patients

In Critical Care recently, we read with great interest the systematic review and meta-analysis by van Zanten and colleagues, who compared enteral glutamine with control in critically ill patients in terms of clinical outcomes [1]. We enthusiastically congratulate and applaud them for their groundbreaking work on this topic. However, some issues in their study should be noted and further discuss...

Permissive Underfeeding or Standard Enteral Feeding in Critically Ill Adults.

BACKGROUND The appropriate caloric goal for critically ill adults is unclear. We evaluated the effect of restriction of nonprotein calories (permissive underfeeding), as compared with standard enteral feeding, on 90-day mortality among critically ill adults, with maintenance of the full recommended amount of protein in both groups. METHODS At seven centers, we randomly assigned 894 critically...

[Enteral nutrition of critically ill patients].

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this article is to review the facilities of early enteral nutrition in critically ill patients. DATA SOURCES Review articles as well as original papers are the main sources for this contribution. SELECTION CRITERIA Pathophysiologic conditions of intestinal substrate assimilation during hypermetabolism are described. The resulting consequences for enteral alimentatio...

Effect of initiating enteral protein feeding on whole-body protein turnover in critically ill patients.

BACKGROUND Critically ill patients are susceptible to protein catabolism. Enteral feeding may ameliorate protein loss, but its effect is not well characterized in terms of protein kinetics. OBJECTIVE We established a method of quantifying the effect of enteral protein feeding on whole-body protein turnover and studied critically ill patients receiving early enteral nutrition. DESIGN In a pr...

Identification of risk factors for enteral feeding intolerance screening in critically ill patients

OBJECTIVES To identify risk factors for enteral feeding intolerance screening in critically ill patients, thereby, provide some reference for healthcare staff to assess the risk of feeding intolerance, and lay the foundation for future scale development.  Methods: This study used a mixed methodology, including a literature review, semi-structured interviews, the Delphi technique, and the analyt...
