چکیده

Abstract The impact of tropical Atlantic Ocean variability modes in the upper-ocean circulation has been investigated. For this purpose, we use three oceanic reanalyses, an interannual forced-ocean simulation, and satellite data for period 1982–2018. We have explored changes main surface subsurface ocean currents during emergence meridional mode (AMM), zonal (AZM), AMM–AZM connection. developing phase AMM is associated with a boreal spring intensification North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC) reinforced summer Eastern Undercurrent (EEUC) north South Current (nSEC). During decaying phase, reduction wind forcing sea height gradient produces weakening circulation. connected AMM–AZM, addition to intensified NECC, EEUC, nSEC spring, anomalous north-equatorial curl excites Rossby wave (RW) that boundary-reflected into equatorial Kelvin (KW). KW reverses thermocline slope, EUC autumn, respectively. AZM, considerably reduced no consistent at levels. autumn upwelling RW-reflected mechanism activated, modifying pressure intensifies nSEC. NECC spring–summer. Our results reveal robust alteration AMM, highlighting decisive role waves connecting transport.

Influence of upper ocean stratification interannual variability on tropical cyclones

Climate modes, such as the El Ni~ no Southern Oscillation (ENSO), influence Tropical Cyclones (TCs) interannual activity through their effect on large-scale atmospheric environment. These climate modes also induce interannual variations of subsurface oceanic stratification, which may also influence TCs. Changes in oceanic stratification indeed modulate the amplitude of TCs-induced cooling, and ...

Changes in Tropical Atlantic Interannual Variability from a Substantial Weakening of the Meridional Overturning Circulation

In response to a substantial weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) from a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model experiment significant changes in the interannual variability are found over the tropical Atlantic, characterized by an increase of variance (by ~150%) in boreal late spring-early summer and a decrease of variance (by ~60%) in boreal autumn. ...

A synthetic float analysis of upper-limb meridional overturning circulation interior ocean pathways in the tropical/subtropical Atlantic

Synthetic floats are released in an ocean general circulation model to study fluid pathways followed by the upper limb of the meridional overturning circulation from the subtropical South Atlantic to the subtropical North Atlantic. The floats are designed to track this fundamentally three-dimensional, nonisentropic flow while sampling water properties and all terms of the equation governing the...
