UPCYCLING OF TECHNOGENIC MINERAL WASTE – CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

Industrial mineral waste accounts for a significant proportion of all global waste. In the European Union it is more than 71% (2,5 Gt ) total amount non-hazardous - construction and demolition waste, ash slag, tailings residues, unconditioned rocks, etc. Latvia, share this about 20%. Due to fact that they are inert, non-biodegradable materials cannot be used energy production reduced by incineration, their stocks increasing every year. Their utilization volumes low focused mainly on use as backfill when carrying out various earthworks. At same time, both in terms composition structure, physical chemical properties, serious resource, processing which can result high-quality useful products, thus implementing upcycling principle newly acquired product has higher added value original. The paper evaluates technical possibilities perspectives eco-innovative from geopolymers, glass ceramics, porous ceramics mineral-organic composite materials.
