Unveiling Women’s Needs and Expectations as Users of Bike Sharing Services: The H2020 DIAMOND Project

Within the objectives of H2020 DIAMOND project, paper investigates women’s needs and expectations as users bike-sharing service managed by Syndicat Mixte Autolib et Velib Métropole in territory Paris Region-Petite Couronne (France). The presents a thematic literature review focused on gender inclusion schemes. proposed methodological approach is based (i) Geographic Information Systems for analysis geolocated open datasets related to land, sociodemographic mobility characteristics areas surrounding each docking stations. This was aimed at identifying short list suitable stations, which were further characterized through: (ii) structured proprietary data travel demand; (iii) onsite observations universal design indicators; (iv) survey questionnaires concerns, expectations; (v) social media from Twitter opinion end-users. Results showed that women use VELIB’s much less than men (about 30% total number users), since they are more concerned about following issues: accessibility (e.g., availability bikes distance nearest station, type quality cycle paths); safety security perception danger insecurity while cycling using current bicycle infrastructures); constraints perceptions cultural stigmatization associated with bike-sharing); weather topography impact urban terrain bike-sharing). final aim project support definition guidelines policies future services.
