Unsupervised Learning for Hydrogen Breath Tests

نویسندگان

چکیده

Hydrogen breath tests are a well-established method to help diagnose functional intestinal disorders such as carbohydrate malabsorption or small bacterial overgrowth. In this work we apply unsupervised machine learning techniques analyze hydrogen test datasets. We propose that uses 26 internal cluster validation measures determine suitable number of clusters. an induced external step use predefined categorization proposed by medical expert. The results indicate the majority considered indexes was not able produce reasonable clustering. Considering performed expert, novel shape-based obtained highest measure in terms adjusted rand index. clusterings constitute basis supervised is part our ongoing research.

Use and abuse of hydrogen breath tests.

Hydrogen breath tests are widely used to explore the pathophysiology of functional gastrointestinal disorders. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and carbohydrate malabsorption are disorders detected by these tests that have been proposed to be of great importance for symptoms in, for instance, irritable bowel syndrome. However, conclusions drawn from these studies are highly controversial a...

Implementation and interpretation of hydrogen breath tests.

Hydrogen breath tests are non-invasive and safe diagnostic tools used to investigate functional intestinal disorders. For the diagnosis of fructose or lactose malabsorption as well as for the detection of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome, hydrogen breath tests are even regarded as gold standard. However, standardization of the testing procedure and the interpretation of the test r...

How to Interpret Hydrogen Breath Tests

Hydrogen breath tests using various substrates like glucose, lactulose, lactose and fructose are being used more and more to diagnose small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and lactose or fructose malabsorption. Though quantitative culture of jejunal aspirate is considered as gold standard for the diagnosis of SIBO, hydrogen breath tests, in spite of their low sensitivity, are popular for...

Acidic colonic microclimate--possible reason for false negative hydrogen breath tests.

About 5% of normal subjects fail to produce increased hydrogen breath concentration after ingestion of the non-digestible carbohydrate lactulose (low hydrogen producers). The existence of low hydrogen producers limits the diagnostic use of hydrogen (H2) breath tests. We studied the effects of lactulose and of magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) pretreatment on stool-pH and on hydrogen exhalation after o...

Tricks for interpreting and making a good report on hydrogen and 13C breath tests.

Breath tests (BT) represent a valid and non-invasive diagnostic tool in many gastroenterological disorders. Their wide diffusion is due to the low cost, simplicity and reproducibility and their common indications include diagnosis of carbohydrate malabsorption, Helicobacter pylori infection, small bowel bacterial overgrowth, gastric emptying time and orocaecal transit time. The review deals wit...
