Unravelling the step-by-step process for farming system design to support agroecological transition

Given the huge challenges agriculture has to face, both in Northern and Southern countries, a radical change farming practices towards agroecology is required. Most scientific literature on design of new systems describes de novo approaches, which focus disruption novelty, without any concern for way move from current system innovative one. In this study, we highlight, first time, particular traits what will call step-by-step approach. aim, disentangled 9 case studies practice commercial or experimental farms through lens theoretical frameworks derived three fields: sciences, research, pathways analysis. From data collected each collective interactions among authors paper, identified commonalities across cases, aim produce guidelines actors willing engage, characterize support such processes future. We thus show that appears as (i) situated process fueled by action, (ii) structured iterative loops diagnosis – exploration implementation assessment, fostered learning, (iii) progressively shaping desirable unknown, (iv) supported specific tools, (v) intertwining individual dimensions. This approach well adapted manage agroecological transition: its temporality, capacity overcome knowledge gaps contribution farmers' empowerment, tailor solutions local specificities. By doing so, it allows progressive profound systemic changes. Finally, article provides benchmarks encourage increased Research & Development investment type approach, contributing open innovation, enhance transition.
