Unprecedented extinction of tree species by fungal disease

چکیده
Myrtle rust is caused by the fungus Austropuccinia psidii and impacts some species in extremely large mostly Gondwanic plant family, Myrtaceae. Given location of its wild relatives, fungal pathogen originated South America spread rapidly across Pacific. Here we report on extensive surveys from Australian rainforest to predict a extinction event unprecedented magnitude. The results imminent 16 tree due myrtle within generation. A further 20 may be at risk, but monitoring required determine their fate. retards growth precludes reproduction these severely affected species. To avoid total extinction, strategies for in-situ ex-situ rescue are presented.

Recent studies have shown that some plant essential oils have fungicidal effects agains...
متن کاملTree diversity and the role of non-host neighbour tree species in reducing fungal pathogen infestation
The degree to which plant pathogen infestation occurs in a host plant is expected to be strongly influenced by the level of species diversity among neighbouring host and non-host plant species. Since pathogen infestation can negatively affect host plant performance, it can mediate the effects of local biodiversity on ecosystem functioning. We tested the effects of tree diversity and the proporti...
متن کاملFungal Keratitis Caused by Aspergillus Species
Background: Fungal keratitis (keratomycosis) is the inflammation of the eye's cornea that results from fungal infection. Case Report: A 29-yrs-old female patient who wears contact lenses presented with ocular pain, redness and blurred vision. Following failures with previous antibacterial topical treatment, a corneal scraping was sent to the mycology laboratory. Fungal elements have been demons...
متن کاملLate quaternary extinction of a tree species in eastern North America.
Widespread species- and genus-level extinctions of mammals in North America and Europe occurred during the last deglaciation [16,000-9,000 yr B.P. (by (14)C)], a period of rapid and often abrupt climatic and vegetational change. These extinctions are variously ascribed to environmental change and overkill by human hunters. By contrast, plant extinctions since the Middle Pleistocene are undocume...
متن کاملGeneration of reactive oxygen species by fungal NADPH oxidases is required for rice blast disease.
One of the first responses of plants to microbial attack is the production of extracellular superoxide surrounding infection sites. Here, we report that Magnaporthe grisea, the causal agent of rice blast disease, undergoes an oxidative burst of its own during plant infection, which is associated with its development of specialized infection structures called appressoria. Scavenging of these oxy...
