چکیده
Abstract Many systems may switch to an undesired state due internal failures or external perturbations, of which critical transitions toward degraded ecosystem states are prominent examples. Resilience restoration focuses on the ability spatially-extended and required time recover their desired under stochastic environmental conditions. The difficulty is rooted in lack mathematical tools analyze with high dimensionality, nonlinearity, effects. Here we show that nucleation theory can be employed advance resilience spatially-embedded ecological systems. We find exhibit single-cluster multi-cluster phases depending sizes noise strengths. also discover a scaling law governing for arbitrary system strengths two-dimensional This approach not limited ecosystems has applications various dynamical systems, from biology infrastructural

How often are chaotic transients in spatially extended ecological systems?
A traditional assumption in quantitative ecology is that the asymptotic state of the model determines what can be observed in the evolution of the system. It is suggested, however, that irregular transient behaviors may be more relevant than the long term behaviors. Here we investigate how often transient dynamics can be expected in spatially extended ecological systems. Our study suggests that...
متن کاملNoise-induced memory in extended excitable systems.
We describe a form of memory exhibited by extended excitable systems driven by stochastic fluctuations. Under such conditions, the system self-organizes into a state characterized by power-law correlations, thus retaining long-term memory of previous states. The exponents are robust and model independent. We discuss implications of these results for the functioning of cortical neurons as well a...
متن کاملResilience of Alternative States in Spatially Extended Ecosystems
Alternative stable states in ecology have been well studied in isolated, well-mixed systems. However, in reality, most ecosystems exist on spatially extended landscapes. Applying existing theory from dynamic systems, we explore how such a spatial setting should be expected to affect ecological resilience. We focus on the effect of local disturbances, defining resilience as the size of the area ...
متن کاملAgroecology and Ecological Restoration: Sustainable Agricultural Landscapes with Resilience
Background: Conventional cattle ranching and agricultural practices have severely degraded and fragmented tropical forests in Latin America. This trend has resulted in the loss of a range of ecosystem services upon which humans depend, especially those that support agricultural production, such as biodiversity, the provision of water and soil fertility. Consequently, conventional cattle ranchin...
متن کاملEnhancing Coral Reef Resilience through Ecological Restoration: Concepts and Challenges
The combination of environmental and anthropogenic stressors has driven the global decline of coral reefs. Changing demographics of the human population and growing dependence on coral reef resources have necessitated mitigation measures to improve the sustainable use of the reef ecosystem. While management measures are useful in slowing the unprecedented loss of coral reefs, active restoration...
