Understanding the Impact of Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyposis on Smell and Taste: An International Patient Experience Survey

The aim is to understand the patient experience of living with chronic rhinosinusitis nasal polyposis (CRSwNP), clinician interactions and how symptoms, smell taste disturbance are managed. An anonymized, online survey was distributed through a UK charity, Fifth Sense, otolaryngology clinic support groups capture qualitative quantitative data. Data were collected from 1st December 2022 February 2023. A total 124 individuals participated. majority female (66%) in age range 41–70 years; 74.2% participants rest North America, Europe Asia. 107 declared they had CRSwNP. Rhinologists general clinicians scored highest for satisfaction whilst practitioners lowest. Satisfaction management lower amongst all compared overall satisfaction. Ratings correlated response therapy interactions. Respondents reported hyposmia/anosmia be most debilitating symptom. Surgery oral steroids considered effective; however, benefit lasted less than six months (62%). Hyposmia/anosmia key CRSwNP symptom that has limited treatment options frequently undervalued by clinicians. There need more effective options, education support.
