Understanding the High Creep Resistance of MRI 230D Magnesium Alloy through Nanoindentation and Atom Probe Tomography

Due to their low density, magnesium alloys are very appealing for light-weight constructions. However, the use of most common alloy, AZ91 (Mg 9 wt.% Al, 1 Zn), is limited temperatures below 150 °C due creep failure. Several with an improved resistance have been developed in past, example alloy MRI 230D or Ca-alloyed variants. there ongoing discussion literature regarding mechanisms resistance. One factor claimed be responsible intermetallic phases which form during casting. Another possible explanation increased formation precipitates. To gain more insight into 230D, nanoindentation measurements performed on different as-cast, creep-deformed and heat-treated samples These clearly show that phase (IP) does not lose strength deformation contrast High-temperature at 200 maintain strength. This clear variants, where IP significantly softer than room temperature.
