Understanding Food Waste Produced by University Students: A Social Practice Approach

We use social practice theory to explore food waste produced by university students living in shared apartments. qualitative techniques including observation, fridge ethnography, garbology and interviews. The most important factors that led among were a lack of organisation related the practices meal planning shopping, where did not make lists, plan meals or conduct inventory before shopping. Observation preparation revealed unlikely correctly sort from other sorts waste, as they always have appropriate bins enable separation. Thus, was properly disposed (e.g., composted). Fridge ethnography both fresh leftovers left lost until no longer edible. Finally, analysis confirmed considerable amount avoidable foods, such foods leftovers, wasted curbside composting bins.
