Ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of laser powder bed fusion 316L stainless steel

Additive manufacturing (AM) has the potential to revolutionize because it can fabricate complex geometries that are not possible with conventional processes. Qualification of AM parts remains challenging due solidification defects (e.g. porosity) and heterogeneous microstructure, both which strongly dependent on process parameters. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques desired provide timely in terms microscopic microstructure variation. This work demonstrates capability ultrasonic phase velocity measurements evaluate microstructural differences stainless steel 316L, caused by changes hatch spacing. We related measured along different directions pore geometry texture parts, using X-ray computed tomography, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), uniaxial tensile tests. Our results confirm depends crystallographic texture. By estimating from EBSD data, our suggest is sensitive anisotropic elastic constants, while moduli as same changes. be extended other processing parameters materials.
