Ultra-diffuse Galaxies as Extreme Star-forming Environments. II. Star Formation and Pressure Balance in H i-rich UDGs

چکیده

In addition to occupying the extreme, diffuse tail of dwarf galaxy population, Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) are themselves a key laboratory in which study star formation extreme low-density environments. second paper this series, we compare spatially resolved activity 22 HI-selected UDGs and 21 "normal" galaxies within 120 Mpc predictions pressure-regulated, feedback-modulated (PRFM) theory formation. To do so, employ joint SED fitting method that allows us estimate rate stellar mass surface density from UV-optical imaging. We find PRFM framework extends successfully UDG regime - although our sample show unusually low densities given their HI content, efficiency can be naturally explained by structure UDGs. fact, when cast framework, relationship between midplane pressure is good agreement not only with reference sample, but also measurements more massive galaxies. Our results suggest despite efficiencies, HI-rich need forming stars an exotic manner. likely H$_2$-poor compared even overall population.

Stellar populations in local star - forming galaxies . II . - Recent star

We present the integrated properties of the stellar populations in the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) Survey galaxies. Applying the techniques described in the first paper of this series, we derive ages, burst masses and metallicities of the newly-formed stars in our sample galaxies. The population of young stars is responsible for the Hα emission used to detect the objects in the UCM ...

Star and Cluster Formation in Extreme Environments

Current empirical evidence on the star-formation processes in the extreme, highpressure environments induced by galaxy encounters (mostly based on highresolution Hubble Space Telescope observations) strongly suggests that star cluster formation is an important and perhaps even the dominant mode of star formation in such starburst events. The sizes, luminosities, and mass estimates of the young ...

Gamma-ray bursts in normal and extreme star-forming galaxies

We discuss how gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical afterglows and multiwavelength observations of their host galaxies can be used to obtain information about the relative amounts of star formation happening in optical and submillimetre galaxies. That such an analysis will be possible follows from the currently-favoured idea that GRBs are closely linked with high-mass star formation. Studying GRB host...
