Quenched growth of nanostructured lead thin films on insulating substrates
Lead island films were obtained via vacuum vapor deposition on glass and ceramic substrates at 80 K. Electrical conductance was measured during vapor condensation and further annealing of the film up to room temperature. The resistance behavior during film formation and atomic force microscopy of annealed films were used as information sources about their structure. A model for the quenched gro...

متن کاملControlling Spin Density Wave Phases in Thin Cr(110) Films
Using angle-resolved photoemission, we have mapped the spin density wave phase diagram of Cr(110) thin films grown on W(110) as a function of film thickness, temperature, and hydrogen surface coverage. We find commensurate and incommensurate phases that are separated by nearly continuous transitions. Surface localized electron states play a key role in the observed thin film phase behaviors. Ou...

متن کاملMode Dependent Toughness and the Delamination of Compressed Thin Films
We consider the buckle-driven delamination of compressed thin lms. For a wide class of patterns of delamination, it is shown that the loading on the delamination front progressively goes from mode I to mode II during growth of the blister. As a result, the mode dependence of the lm/substrate interface excludes widespread delamination. This explains the observations of blisters of nite extent, w...
