Two-dimensional magnetic transition metal halides: MBE growth and physical property modulation

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials, which exhibit spontaneous magnetization maintained down to the monolayer limit, provide an ideal platform understand and manipulate properties in 2D scale have potential applications optoelectronics spintronics. Transition metal halides (TMHs) are suitable candidates owing partially filled d orbitals weak interlayer van der Waals interactions. As a sophisticated thin film growth technique, molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) can precisely tune of materials reaching limit. Herein, we introduce crystalline structures TMHs, show TMHs grown by MBE their electronic characterizations, particular, scanning tunneling microscopy. Then, MBE-based methods for tuning physical property including stacking tuning, defect topological discussed. Finally, conclude with opportunities challenges future development TMHs.
