چکیده
Organic aerosols are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and oxygenated organics a major driver of aerosol growth. The volatility basis set (VBS) as introduced by Donahue et al. (2006, 2011) is often used to simplify partitioning behavior huge variety atmospheric organics. Recently, VBS was dynamically model growth from smallest sizes onwards. This tutorial intended equip reader with necessary tools facilitate organic modelling based on gas-phase measurements using 2-dimensional VBS. We start contextualization theory point out need for dynamic modeling. provide an overview most common methods estimate give detailed instruction how construct binned then explain condensation including solution curvature effects. Furthermore, we python package calculations show two examples ambient chamber rates can be calculated. Last, summarize limitation this approach outline future developments.

متن کاملModeling Organic Aerosol Formation from Alpha-Pinene Ozonolysis in the Volatility Basis Set Framework
Volatile organic compounds released by plants or through processes such as combustion reacts with oxidative species in the air, such as ozone or hydroxyl radicals. Smog chamber studies are conducted to determine the chemistry that these organic precursors undergo, and the products that are formed. These products span orders of magnitude in volatility, making the tracking of each individual spec...
متن کاملSimulating the oxygen content of ambient organic aerosol with the 2D volatility basis set
A module predicting the oxidation state of organic aerosol (OA) has been developed using the two-dimensional volatility basis set (2D-VBS) framework. This model is an extension of the 1D-VBS framework and tracks saturation concentration and oxygen content of organic species during their atmospheric lifetime. The host model, a onedimensional Lagrangian transport model, is used to simulate air pa...

متن کاملA two-dimensional volatility basis set – Part 2: Diagnostics of organic-aerosol evolution
We discuss the use of a two-dimensional volatility-oxidation space (2-D-VBS) to describe organicaerosol chemical evolution. The space is built around two coordinates, volatility and the degree of oxidation, both of which can be constrained observationally or specified for known molecules. Earlier work presented the thermodynamics of organics forming the foundation of this 2-D-VBS, allowing us t...
