چکیده

This paper uses multimedia to showcase the narratives and lived experiences of those who live work in tropical Asian mega-deltas, as such is first journal article its kind field Regional Geography. Using videos, photography audio this describes characteristics ponds their place intrinsically connected human-environmental fabric these delta regions. The aim bring life descriptive inventories provide greater weight support our conclusion that mega-delta are important threatened systems. River deltas comprise just 1% land cover worldwide but livelihoods more than 500 million people. Delta research has historically focused on major river channels socio-ecological role been overlooked despite large number surface area. Ponds linked daily (potable water, sanitation, bathing, washing), industry (aquaculture, agriculture) natural-cultural heritage (religion, folklore) deltas. In contrast larger channels, likely be significant stores processors nutrients, including carbon, pollutants at annual decadal scales, account heavy anthropogenic use smaller individual sizes. Consequently, they severely polluted water sources pose public health risks. review, we case studies from three mega-deltas (the Red Mekong Delta, Vietnam, Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna India Bangladesh) highlight importance systems own right. We discuss future environmental challenges, knowledge gaps ecological function biodiversity habitats, management policy practices, capacity achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Threatened biotas: "hot spots" in tropical forests.

The mass-extinction episode underway is largely centered on tropical forests, insofar as they contain at least half of all Earth's species and they are being depleted faster than any other biome. But species distributions and depletion patterns are anything but uniform throughout the biome. This paper identifies 10 areas that a) are characterized by exceptional concentrations of species with ...

Invited Feature: Protected Areas as Socioecological Systems

Protected areas (PAs) remain central to the conservation of biodiversity. Classical PAs were conceived as areas that would be set aside to maintain a natural state with minimal human influence. However, global environmental change and growing cross-scale anthropogenic influences mean that PAs can no longer be thought of as ecological islands that function independently of the broader social-eco...

Genomic sequencing and microsatellite marker development for Boswellia papyrifera, an economically important but threatened tree native to dry tropical forests

Microsatellite (or simple sequence repeat, SSR) markers are highly informative DNA markers often used in conservation genetic research. Next-generation sequencing enables efficient development of large numbers of SSR markers at lower costs. Boswellia papyrifera is an economically important tree species used for frankincense production, an aromatic resinous gum exudate from bark. It grows in dry...

Deliberative assessment in complex socioecological systems

Desertification is a complex process, characterised not only by a damaged ecology, but also by conflict over access to scarce resources and trade-offs between the needs of multiple stakeholders at multiple scales. As such, orthodox approaches to environmental assessment in drylands, which rely solely on ecological expertise, are gradually losing legitimacy and greater attention is being given t...

Evaluation of potential Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) culture in ponds of Choebde, Abadan

Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) is a potential candidate species for rearing in pond system in Iran because of its fast growth rate, ability to adapt to varying environmental conditions and its demand in domestic as well as export markets. Hence, growth parameters, survival and body composition of Asian seabass (20.70±0.36 g) was investigated. Experiment was conducted in three ponds In Choebde...
