Trisutji Kamal’s Loro Jonggrang: A Cross-Cultural Dissonance

Trisutji Kamal, whose career spanned five decades, was one of the oldest and longest-performing Indonesian female classical composers. Her music is tinged with a unique character, stemming from way she inserted Javanese nuances into Western framework her art. To discuss this musical style, authors analysed most well-known compositions in form an opera, called Loro Jonggrang. The article examines how two different traditions West Java intersect cultural subjectivity. argue that what emerges sense dissonance through use pseudo pentatonic, chords, drone, accents, beats, connecting Trisutji’s background life history. contend dissonant turn glissando effect comes tension between forms intuition. contributes to rare scholarship about composers Southeast Asia.
