Trembling Aspen Stand Response 15 Years after Windthrow, Salvage Harvesting, and Forest Renewal

چکیده

Windthrow is a common occurrence in boreal forests, affecting wood supply and presenting regeneration challenges for forest managers. Salvage harvesting often conducted afterwards to extract valuable improve access renewal activities. Research efforts, however, are generally limited the effects of windthrow salvage first few years following disturbance. In 2006, catastrophic wind event occurred trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) northeastern Ontario. A field study was established with range silvicultural treatments from leaving after (W) including windrow site preparation, planting, herbicide release (WSPR). While results 5-year assessment have been reported, objective current reassess treatment at 15 post-disturbance, stage stand development that more indicative future conditions. Compared earlier assessment, 15-year indicated standing dead (snags) declined, whereas coarse downed did not change substantially over time. Post-disturbance improved terms density, stocking, growth, but reduced proportion conifers relative only. Thus, helped sustain composition, compared other options increased proportions pine spruce trees W combined preparation planting (WSP), WSP WSPR.

Limited salvage logging effects on forest regeneration after moderate-severity windthrow.

Recent conceptual advances address forest response to multiple disturbances within a brief time period, providing an ideal framework for examining the consequences of natural disturbances followed by anthropogenic management activities. The combination of two or more disturbances in a short period may produce "ecological surprises," and models predict a threshold of cumulative disturbance sever...

Ecology and Silviculture of Trembling Aspen

Trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) generally grows as clones in which stems, ranging from many thousands to only a few, are interconnected by a common root system. When clones are very large, in one recorded case involving about 47␣ 000 stems joined together over a 43 ha area, aspen becomes a candidate for earth’s most massive and oldest organism. Recent analyses suggest that aspen cl...

Carbon isotope discrimination and water stress in trembling aspen following variable retention harvesting.

Variable retention harvesting (VRH) has been proposed as a silvicultural practice to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem integrity. No previous study has examined tree carbon isotope discrimination to provide insights into water stress that could lead to dieback and mortality of trees following VRH. We measured and compared the carbon isotope ratios (delta(13)C) in stem wood of trembling aspen ...

Responses of trembling aspen and hazelnut to vapor pressure deficit in a boreal deciduous forest.

The branch bag method was used to monitor photosynthesis and transpiration of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and hazelnut (Corylus cornuta Marsh.) over a 42-day midsummer period in 1996, as part of the Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOREAS). During the same period, daytime measurements of stomatal conductance (g(s)) and leaf water potential (Psi(leaf)) were made on these speci...

Competitive effects of the forest tent caterpillar on the gallers and leaf-miners of trembling aspen

Interspecific competition has been identified as a major structuring force in phytophagous arthropod communities. We would expect to find particularly strong competitive effects in communities with outbreaking components, where the joint food resource is depleted by a single super-abundant species. To assess how arthropod assemblages of the trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides, Salicaceae) resp...
