Tree lines do not reduce grassland productivity and herbage quality in alley cropping under drought

In alley cropping, woody perennials are combined with agricultural crops or grassland in order to benefit from favourable interactions between trees and crops. Trees influence growth senescence processes as well plant chemical composition water use. a field experiment alley-cropped willow coppices, we analysed the impact of distance position relative tree line on herbage biomass, proportion dead quality two successive periods experimental years. The years were chosen so that among showed similar rainfall pattern. Relative ET (evapotranspiration) defined by actual divided potential evapotranspiration reflected severity shortage moderately dry (relative ~ 0.5) first period increasing dryness second each year. We determined bulk stomatal conductivity grass shoot measuring δ13C (carbon) signatures. Stomatal conductivities higher close drier (i.e. more negative values). Herbage biomass decreased decreasing ET, but no systematic line. found vegetation changed was equal at all distances under very conditions, smaller conditions. quality, approximated crude protein ADF concentrations live closer conclude does not adversely affect productivity drought improves status signature.
