Tree-level differences in Norway spruce and Scots pine growth after extreme thinning treatments

نویسندگان

چکیده

We studied tree-level dynamics (stem slenderness and growth) in spruce- pine-dominated stands after intermediate commercial thinning of different type (low, crown normal, strict) intensity (standard extreme), for two 5-years growth periods. Thinning treatments were included modeling as numerical variables based on how they changed the stand- conditions (in terms mean diameter remaining trees basal area larger removed). Stem significantly decreased with time both species all types only extreme (excluding low pine). Regarding growth, it was slightly higher than thinning, much types. Pine had a lower second period compared first one. Height differences not found across treatments. Concluding, increased individual tree stem carried out according to standard guidelines. Across types, there small differences, hence seems viable option widely used Fennoscandia.

Boron retranslocation in Scots pine and Norway spruce.

We previously traced 10B-enriched boric acid from shoots to roots to demonstrate the translocation of boron (B) in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seedlings. To gain a more detailed understanding of B translocation, we sought: (1) to demonstrate B retranslocation directly, by showing that foliar-applied 10B is located in the new growth after dormancy...

Durability of thermally modified Norway spruce and Scots pine in above ground conditions

One of the main objectives of thermal modification is to increase the biological durability of wood. In this study the fungal resistance of Norway spruce and Scots pine, thermally modified at 1958C and 2108C, was studied with a lap-joint field test. Untreated pine and spruce and pine impregnated with tributyl tin oxide (TBTO) and copper, chromium and arsenic (CCA) were selected as reference mat...

Natural Regeneration of Scots Pine and Norway Spruce Close to the Timberline in Northern Finland

Two different datasets were analyzed in order to clarify the factors that affect regeneration success of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) in the climatically extreme areas in northern Finland. First, pine seed maturity and the number of cones in the trees were investigated at five pairs of study sites during the period 1997–2003. Secondly, the rate of seedling estab...
