Transparent Al2O3 fabricated by energy efficient spark plasma sintering

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) techniques have been intensively investigated for manufacturing of diverse materials. Numerous methods researched to achieve a reduction the time, larger scale production, and significant energy savings. Usually, traditional SPS need prohibitively high outputs fabricate transparent ceramics. Previous studies showed that input power can be significantly decreased when an efficient configuration using BN-coated graphite foils is used, but many samples obtained this approach had cracks. The developed new thermally managed (TM-SPS) results in prevention cracks, full densification, uniform transparency alumina. Furthermore, consumption 17% lower compared configuration. Therefore, TM- method has potential fabricating ceramic various materials with transparency. A comprehensive three-dimensional fully coupled thermo-electro-mechanical finite element framework used modeling different configurations.

Transparent polycrystalline spinel ceramic was fabricated without any sintering aids by spark plasma sintering method of a mixture of Al2O3 and MgO powders for only 10min soak at 1250°C. Densification, microstructure and optical transparency of spinel were examined. The spinel exhibits an in-line transmission of 55% for a visible-wavelength of 470nm and high hardness value of 2040 HV.
