Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Noise Exposure Questionnaire (NEQ) to Brazilian Portuguese

ABSTRACT Objective To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Noise Exposure Questionnaire (NEQ) 1-Minute Screen (NEQ-S) instruments to Brazilian Portuguese. Methods Procedures widely known in health research were used translation cross-cultural adaptation process, comprising following steps: initial translation, synthesis of translations, back-translation, expert committee, pretest, content layout validation. Altogether, 60 workers participated pretest by answering questionnaires then evaluating them terms understandability, layout, clarity, writing. Reliability was verified with Cohen's kappa test, internal consistency analyzed Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Results The translated adapted versions NEQ NEQ-S similar general referential meanings. However, some modifications adaptations made reality. test indicated moderate agreement coefficient, substantial consistency. Conclusion carried out according methodology recommended national international literature, performing necessary equivalences maintain face validity original instrument. availability Portuguese opens new fields quantify yearly noise exposure more in-depth.
