چکیده

We consider a 2-layer quasi-geostrophic ocean model where the upper layer is forced by steady Kolmogorov wind stress in periodic channel domain, which allows to mathematically study nonlinear development of resulting flow. The supports parallel shear flow as response stress. As maximal velocity (equivalently amplitude forcing) exceeds critical threshold, zonal jet destabilizes due baroclinic instability and we numerically demonstrate that first transition occurs. obtain reduced equations system using formalism dynamic theory establish two scenarios completely describe this transition. generic scenario conjugate pair modes loses stability Hopf bifurcation occurs result. Under an appropriate set parameters describing related midlatitude oceanic flows, show continuous: supercritical stable time solution bifurcates. also investigate case double bifurcations occur when four linear problem simultaneously destabilize jet. In case, prove that, relevant parameter regime, exhibits continuous accompanied bifurcated attractor homeomorphic \(S^3\). topological structure analyzed detail shown depend on parameters. particular, contains (stable or unstable) time-periodic solutions quasi-periodic solution.

Controls Insensitizing the Observation of a Quasi-geostrophic Ocean Model

Abstract. We consider a linear quasi-geostrophic ocean model with partially known initial conditions. We search for controls that make the observation locally insensitive to the perturbations of the initial data. Their existence is equivalent to the null controllability property for an associated cascade Stokes-like system. Thanks to the presence of the Coriolis term, we are able to prove the e...

Synchronization and chaos control in a periodically forced quasi-geostrophic two-layer model of baroclinic instability

Cyclic forcing on many timescales is believed to have a significant effect on various quasi-periodic, geophysical phenomena such as El Niño, the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, and glacial cycles. This variability has been investigated by numerous previous workers, in models ranging from simple energy balance constructions to full general circulation models. We present a numerical study in which pe...

Dynamic Transitions of Quasi-geostrophic Channel Flow

The main aim of this paper is to study the dynamic transitions in flows described by the two-dimensional, barotropic vorticity equation in a periodic zonal channel. In [Z.-M. Chen et al., SIAM J. Appl. Math., 64 (2003), pp. 343–368], the existence of a Hopf bifurcation in this model as the Reynolds number crosses a critical value was proven. In this paper, we extend the results in [Z.-M. Chen e...

Coexisting chaotic climate attractors in a two-layer quasi-geostrophic model

An intriguing manifestation of the underlying nonlinear fluid dynamic character of the atmosphere is found in a simple quasi-geostrophic model of the troposphere. For identical forcing and dissipation, the model’s climate is found to depend sensitively upon the choice of initial conditions, tending either toward a state resembling the current Northern Hemisphere wintertime circulation, characte...

Exact semi-geostrophic flows in an elliptical ocean basin*

A new family of exact solutions is analysed, which models two-dimensional circulations of an ideal fluid in a uniformly rotating elliptical tank, under the semi-geostrophic approximation from meteorology and oceanography. The fluid pressure and stream function remain quadratic functions of space at each instant in time, and their fluctuations are described by a single degree of freedom Hamilton...
