Transitioning from conventional continuous grazing to planned rest-rotation grazing: A beef cattle case study from central Texas

چکیده
Debate on the superiority of rotational or continuous grazing continues, but proponents each call for additional research to enhance management decisions. The short-term impact transitioning from an alternative system is not well understood even though transition can require substantial changes in infrastructure and decisions related forage availability, duration livestock movement, planting, supplemental feeding. objective this five-year case study a humid, subtropical environment was evaluate real-world challenges opportunities beef cattle operations conventional planned rest-rotation system. experimental data observations (i.e., production, diet quality, response, economics, soil health) showcased that under had potential increased annual improved health (on cultivated grazed paddocks with multispecies crops, grassland), reduced costs; however, produced higher body condition scores cows revenue. Average profits (~US$5.32 ac−1 [US$2.15 ha−1]) were similar both systems considering all economic factors. Key lessons learned faced include difficulty no-till establishment cool-season importance adequate fertilization crops dietary supplementation cold season.

Songbird response to rest-rotation and season-long cattle grazing in a grassland sagebrush ecosystem.
Grazing on natural rangelands, which are areas dominated by native vegetation that are used for livestock grazing, can achieve desired vegetation outcomes, preserve native habitat, and economically benefit multiple stakeholders. It is a powerful tool that can be manipulated to reduce wildlife declines and benefit ecosystems. However, the benefits of conservation grazing systems on many wildlife...
متن کاملSupplementary Feeding of Grazing Beef Cattle
Some 60% of Australia% beef cattle are located in the tropics and subtropics, grazing, in general native pastures of low digestibility and N content. Production per head is low, as also are reproductive rates. The nutritional problem centres around the low contents of phosphorus, sulphur and nitrogen in pastures from June to December. This paper discusses responses in breeding cattle to supplem...
متن کاملTrace Mineral Supplementation of Grazing Beef Cattle
The nutrient quality of forage, particularly perennial warm-season grasses, is often lacking in trace mineral content to supply the requirements of most all classes of grazing cattle. Since forage is the most significant contributor to the trace mineral nutrition of grazing beef cattle, it is important to consider these deficits and how they may impact the performance of the cattle consuming th...
متن کاملEvaluating dispersion modeling options to estimate methane emissions from grazing beef cattle.
Enteric methane (CH) emission from cattle is a source of greenhouse gas and is an energy loss that contributes to production inefficiency for cattle. Direct measurements of enteric CH emissions are useful to quantify the magnitude and variation and to evaluate mitigation of this important greenhouse gas source. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the impact of stocking density of catt...
متن کاملComparisons of Cattle Grazing and Sheep Grazing
Controversy has surrounded the possible differences in pasture production which result from grazing by cattle or sheep. Experiments conducted over the 1972-76 period show that pasture production under grazing by sheep is greater than under grazing by cattle under similar intensive managements. A change from sheep grazing to cattle grazing can cause a rapid deterioration in pasture production, w...
