Transition from volcano-sagging to volcano-spreading

چکیده

Many volcanoes exhibit evidence of long-term deformation driven by gravity. This influences the development magmatic plumbing systems and volcanic vent locations, it manifests as earthquakes ground surface motions. Two end-member styles are volcano sagging (flexure) spreading. Previous modeling studies indicated that mechanical geometric properties basement rocks below can control whether a spreads or sags, but these works differed on exactly how. Furthermore, in nature may progress from to spreading grows has not been tested experimentally. Using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) revised scaling approach, we here revisit classic experiments which sand–plaster cone is emplaced upon comprising an upper brittle layer lower ductile layer. In first experiment series, instantaneously. By normalizing both thicknesses height, provide new insight into dimensionless controls sagging. novel second incrementally. We show growing migrates through parameter space, its style changes successively time DIC shows horizontal velocity flank increases linearly non-linearly during construction, decreases exponentially after construction ceases. Despite their simplification omission several sedimentological, magmatic, regional-tectonic processes, our models' results compatible with range observations Earth Mars. particular, they help explain: (i) why lithosphere-scale loading rather than spreading, (ii) ocean island >2-3 km height develop stellate forms rift zones.

Predictability of Volcano Eruption: lessons from a basaltic effusive volcano

Volcano eruption forecast remains a challenging and controversial problem despite the fact that data from volcano monitoring significantly increased in quantity and quality during the last decades. This study uses pattern recognition techniques to quantify the predictability of the 15 Piton de la Fournaise (PdlF) eruptions in the 1988-2001 period using increase of the daily seismicity rate as a...

Volcano-earthquake interaction at Mauna Loa volcano, Hawaii

[1] The activity at Mauna Loa volcano, Hawaii, is characterized by eruptive fissures that propagate into the Southwest Rift Zone (SWRZ) or into the Northeast Rift Zone (NERZ) and by large earthquakes at the basal decollement fault. In this paper we examine the historic eruption and earthquake catalogues, and we test the hypothesis that the events are interconnected in time and space. Earthquake...

Sulfur Degassing from Mt. Erebus Volcano, Antarctica

SO2 emission rates from Erebus volcano show periodicity, which directly relates to lava lake convection and magma and conduit processes. Mt. Erebus is a 3794 m stratovolcano with a persistently degassing convecting, phonolite lava lake. Lava lake SO2 emission rates were collected from 1992 to 2003 using the correlation spectrometer (COSPEC) and in 2003 and 2005 using a miniature ultra-violet di...

Pairing the Volcano

Isogeny volcanoes are graphs whose vertices are elliptic curves and whose edges are `-isogenies. Algorithms allowing to travel on these graphs were developed by Kohel in his thesis (1996) and later on, by Fouquet and Morain (2001). However, up to now, no method was known, to predict, before taking a step on the volcano, the direction of this step. Hence, in Kohel's and Fouquet-Morain algorithms...
