Transition from steady to oscillating convection rolls in Rayleigh-Bénard convection under the influence of a horizontal magnetic field

The effect of a horizontal magnetic field on the oscillatory instability convection rolls in finite liquid-metal layer is investigated. flow measurements reveal that first developing oscillations are two-dimensional nature. In particular, mutual increase and decrease size adjacent observed where periodicity ``breathing'' can be related to standing inertial waves. With gradual reduction magnetic-field strength, oscillating increasingly affected by three-dimensional disturbances.

Thermal-noise effect on the transition to Rayleigh-Bénard convection.

We report measurements of fluctuation and roll patterns near the transition to Rayleigh-Bénard convection which are consistent with a fluctuation-induced first-order transition, as predicted by Swift and Hohenberg. Above onset, we find convection rolls with noise-induced fluctuations, time-dependent amplitude modulation and roll undulation, and homogeneous dislocation nucleation.
