Transient weakening during the granulite to eclogite transformation within hydrous shear zones (Holsnøy, Norway)

چکیده
In Holsnøy (Bergen Arcs, Norway), metastable granulite facies anorthosite rocks are partially eclogitised within hydrous shear zones, that have been interpreted as widening over time with fluid influx and strain. We here present a detailed petrological description of two different metre-scale zones from this area. Within few tens centimetres each zone, the protolith (initially plagioclase + garnet pyroxenes) is transformed into an albite zoisite clinopyroxene assemblage. The outer edge consists in fine-grained heterogeneous assemblage omphacite kyanite phengite ± quartz. core homogeneous eclogite coarser As widened time, lateral evolution to reflects temporal beginning end eclogitisation reaction. quartz therefore represents transient Field observations suggest mechanically weaker than both starting strong final eclogite. investigate impact weakening during syn-tectonic metamorphism using one-dimensional numerical model fluid-fluxed, reacting zone. show required explain our field observations. Furthermore, although was primarily controlled by infiltration, we strain hardening reactions sequence had noticeable effect on zones.

Surface shear-transformation zones in amorphous solids.
We perform a systematic study of the characteristics of shear transformation zones (STZs) that nucleate at free surfaces of two-dimensional amorphous solids subject to tensile loading using two different atomistic simulation methods, the standard athermal, quasistatic (AQ) approach and our recently developed self-learning metabasin escape (SLME) method, to account for the finite temperature and...
متن کاملFault Weakening and Shear Localization during Crater Collapse
Introduction: The observed morphologies of impact basins can only be explained by invoking dramatic weakening of the crater walls and floor during crater collapse, but the mechanism underlying the drop in strength is unknown. Here, we explore the possibility that strain-weakening along faults is the primary mechanism. We present a model of temperatureand pressure-dependant strain-weakening alon...
متن کاملConsequences of progressive eclogitisation on crustal exhumation, a mechanical study
The very low water content of the granulitic unit of Holsnøy, in the Bergen Arcs, Norway, caused its partial metastable preservation throughout Caledonian burial end exhumation, leading to the observed mixture of completely eclogitized and uneclogitized rocks. Large-scale eclogite-facies fracturing enabled fluid penetration into the granulite and subsequent eclogitization, and resulted in a ver...

Rare ultrahigh-temperature–(near)ultrahigh-pressure (UHT–near-UHP) crustal xenoliths erupted at 11 Ma in the Pamir Mountains, southeastern Tajikistan, preserve a compositional and thermal record at mantle depths of crustal material subducted beneath the largest collisional orogen on Earth. A combination of oxygen-isotope thermometry, major-element thermobarometry and pseudosection analysis reve...
متن کاملCharacterization of olivine fabrics and mylonite in the presence of fluid and implications for seismic anisotropy and shear localization
The Lindås Nappe, Bergen Arc, is located in western Norway and displays two high-grade metamorphic structures. A Precambrian granulite facies foliation is transected by Caledonian fluid-induced eclogite-facies shear zones and pseudotachylytes. To understand how a superimposed tectonic event may influence olivine fabric and change seismic anisotropy, two lenses of spinel lherzolite were studied ...
