Transient thermal models of induction machines under Inter‐turn short‐circuit fault conditions

Induction machines are the working horses in a lot of industries. Inter-turn short-circuit (ITSC) fault is one most common failure modes taking place them. It can generate large currents that lead to local temperature rise faulty stator slot, which deteriorates performance machine or even cascades complete breakdown. This article focuses on developing transient thermal models for an induction under ITSC faults. The aim these understand behaviour at different propagation stages. first model based finite element method (FEM) simulation includes physics-based contact resistance. second lumped parameter network as inter-connected slot-number parts. They both capable modelling characteristic non-uniform along circumferential direction operating conditions. After area-weighted averaging results FEM simulation, it found they quantitatively consistent, with average relative error magnitude 5%, well.
