Transcutaneous Spinal Cord Stimulation Restores Hand and Arm Function After Spinal Cord Injury

چکیده
Paralysis of the upper extremity severely restricts independence and quality life after spinal cord injury. Regaining control hand arm movements is highest treatment priority for people with paralysis, 6-fold higher than restoring walking ability. Nevertheless, current approaches to improve function typically do not restore independence. Spinal stimulation an emerging neuromodulation strategy motor function. Recent studies using surgically implanted electrodes demonstrate impressive improvements in voluntary standing stepping. Here we show that transcutaneous electrical leads rapid sustained recovery function, even complete paralysis. Notably, magnitude these matched or exceeded previously reported results from stimulation. Additionally, muscle spasticity was reduced autonomic functions including heart rate, thermoregulation, bladder improved. Perhaps most striking all six participants maintained their gains at least three months beyond stimulation, indicating functional mediated by long-term neuroplasticity. Several resumed hobbies require fine control, such as playing guitar oil painting, first time up 12 years since injuries. Our findings non-invasive networks restores movement hands both paralysis

Spinal Cord Stimulation for Multiple Sclerosis and Spinal Cord Injury
Since 1973, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been reported to modulate abnormal motor functions such as spasticity, weakness, ataxia, athetosis, neurogenic bladder, dysarthria, dystonia and torticollis. As reported in 39 papers, improved neurological functions did occur in 45 to 64% of 1,008 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), spinal cord injury (SCI), cerebral palsy and other dystonic and ...

Paralysis due to spinal cord injury can severely limit motor function and independence. This review summarizes different approaches to electrical stimulation of the spinal cord designed to restore motor function, with a brief discussion of their origins and the current understanding of their mechanisms of action. Spinal stimulation leads to impressive improvements in motor function along with s...

Locomotor behavior is controlled by specific neural circuits called central pattern generators primarily located at the lumbosacral spinal cord. These locomotor-related neuronal circuits have a high level of automaticity; that is, they can produce a "stepping" movement pattern also seen on electromyography (EMG) in the absence of supraspinal and/or peripheral afferent inputs. These circuits can...
متن کاملAn Autonomic Neuroprosthesis: Noninvasive Electrical Spinal Cord Stimulation Restores Autonomic Cardiovascular Function in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury
Despite autonomic dysfunction after spinal cord injury (SCI) being the major cause of death and a top health priority, the clinical management options for these conditions are limited to drugs with delayed onset and nonpharmacological interventions with equivocal effectiveness. We tested the capacity of electrical stimulation, applied transcutaneously over the spinal cord, to manage autonomic d...

BACKGROUND By affecting young people during the most productive period of their lives, spinal cord injury is a devastating problem for modern society. A decade ago, treating SCI seemed frustrating and hopeless because of the tremendous morbidity and mortality, life-shattering impact, and limited therapeutic options associated with the condition. Today, however, an understanding of the underlyin...
