Trade-offs in telemetry tag programming for deep-diving cetaceans: data longevity, resolution, and continuity

چکیده
Abstract Background Animal-borne telemetry instruments (tags) have greatly advanced our understanding of species that are challenging to observe. Recently, non-recoverable attached cetaceans increased in use, but these devices limitations data transmission bandwidth. We analyze trade-offs the longevity, resolution, and continuity records from satellite-linked tags on deep-diving Ziphius cavirostris context a behavioral response study acute noise exposure. present one collection programming scheme balances resolution against longevity address specific questions about responses animals exposure experimental contexts. compare outputs between two regimes commercially available tag: (1) dive behavior summary defined by conductivity thresholds (2) depth time-series at various temporal resolutions. Results found vary more precisely dives record stream an acceptable error range for application. determined 5-min collected 14 days balanced with achieving complete or nearly diving 6 out 8 deployments. message reception rate several fold employing boat based capture system. Finally, tag deployed group concurrently high-resolution recorder showed high concordance. Conclusions conceptual framework iterative process matching research we used which should be applicable wide studies. Although designing new hardware was not feasible time, were able optimize sampling regime instrument meet needs proposed analyses. Nevertheless, other designs, complicated intersection animal bandwidth systems can often create severe mismatch among questions, collection, analysis tools. More flexible purpose-built will increase efficacy studies scientific yield relative inherently higher risk invasive

متن کاملDo longevity mutants always show trade-offs?
A number of genetic mutations that substantially increase longevity have been discovered in model organisms. Although these long-lived mutants have provided many insights into the factors that affect longevity, the results from such studies should be interpreted with caution. In particular, at least some of these mutations may be poor guides to human medical intervention because they often have...
متن کاملSupercritical Space-Width Trade-Offs for Resolution
We show that there are CNF formulas which can be refuted in resolution in both small space and small width, but for which any small-width resolution proof must have space exceeding by far the linear worst-case upper bound. This significantly strengthens the space-width trade-offs in [BenSasson 2009], and provides one more example of trade-offs in the “supercritical” regime above worst case rece...
متن کاملSomatotropic signaling: trade-offs between growth, reproductive development, and longevity.
Growth hormone (GH) is a key determinant of postnatal growth and plays an important role in the control of metabolism and body composition. Surprisingly, deficiency in GH signaling delays aging and remarkably extends longevity in laboratory mice. In GH-deficient and GH-resistant animals, the "healthspan" is also extended with delays in cognitive decline and in the onset of age-related disease. ...
متن کاملTestability Trade-Offs for BIST Data Paths
Power dissipation during test application is an emerging problem due to yield and reliability concerns. This paper focuses on BIST for RTL data paths and discusses testability trade-offs in terms of test application time, BIST area overhead and power dissipation.
