Trade-offs between physical risk and economic reward affect fishers’ vulnerability to changing storminess

چکیده
• Fishers trade off physical risk and economic reward in decisions to go sea. Trip likelihood increases with wind speed wave height up a threshold. After this threshold, fishers’ aversion worsening weather conditions increases. Technical fishing socio-economic factors affect weather-related decisions. Fishers’ response determines their sensitivity changing storminess. Climate change-driven alterations storm frequency intensity threaten the wellbeing of billions people who depend on fisheries for food security livelihoods. Weather shape vulnerability both loss life reduced opportunities through influence fishers' daily participation The trade-off between at sea rewards continued under adverse is critical component trip but poorly understood. We employed stated choice experiment skippers from temperate mixed-species fishery southwest England empirically assess how fishers risks greater benefits expected catch prices. data were collected individual identify influencing preferred increased after which they became increasingly averse conditions. Fishing gear, vessel length, presence crew, ownership, age, recent success reliance income all influenced skippers’ This study provides first insight into socio-economic, environmental, technical that can These insights help inform climate assessments development adaptation measures.

Global economic trade-offs between wild nature and tropical agriculture
Global demands for agricultural and forestry products provide economic incentives for deforestation across the tropics. Much of this deforestation occurs with a lack of information on the spatial distribution of benefits and costs of deforestation. To inform global sustainable land-use policies, we combine geographic information systems (GIS) with a meta-analysis of ecosystem services (ES) stud...

expanding discipline of evolutionary physiology is a more detailed understanding of the role of physiological constraints in evolution (Garland and Carter, 1994; Feder et al., 2000). Physiological constraints can arise when an organism has to perform multiple tasks that place conflicting demands on its physiological design: an increase in the performance of one task may lead to a decrease in th...
متن کاملTrade-Offs between Yield and Reliability Enhancement *
Deep sub-micron VLSI technologies have led to a large increase in the number of devices per die as well as the switching speeds. These advances have been accompanied by increased design complexity and decreasing reliability. Scaling of the device dimensions has introduced “analog” effects on-chip that he causing signal integrity and delay problems. These problems are not easy to estimate and re...
متن کاملTrade-offs between pathogen and herbivore resistance.
During the past year genetic and pharmacological experiments have revealed a molecular basis for the cross-talk between signaling pathways mediating pathogen and herbivore resistance. These findings provide considerable insight into the apparently contradictory results reported for trade-offs between pathogen and herbivore resistance.
متن کاملParsing to Stanford Dependencies: Trade-offs between Speed and Accuracy
We investigate a number of approaches to generating Stanford Dependencies, a widely used semantically-oriented dependency representation. We examine algorithms specifically designed for dependency parsing (Nivre, Nivre Eager, Covington, Eisner, and RelEx) as well as dependencies extracted from constituent parse trees created by phrase structure parsers (Charniak, Charniak-Johnson, Bikel, Berkel...
