Trace Metal Enrichments in Water of the Okavango Delta (Botswana): Hydrological Consequences

چکیده

The Okavango Delta in northern Botswana is an endorheic ecosystem formed by 150,000 islands surrounded a flood plain. vegetation of these displays external tree ring enclosing barren interior domain with evaporitic deposits. We sampled the groundwater into piezometers across island at southwest Delta, and drilled sediments. geochemical analysis water exhibits two different compositions: fresh floodplain saline part. These inner samples display enrichments heavy metals, metalloids critical metals such as, Rare Earth Elements (REE). latest show continuous enrichment from LREE to HREE positive Ce Eu anomalies, associated alkaline pH. Overall, types displayed REE patterns fingerprint sources. geochemistry sediments indicates same composition whatever sample location no traces deposits was found. variations table depth shows hydrological behaviors between zone which does not follow cycle. Thus, we document aquifers independent behaviors: surface fresh-water aquifer connected channels, confined below islands. contrasted waters explains distribution survives through access water. architecture this southwestern differs other islands, highlighting complexity Delta.

Fish trypanosomes from the Okavango Delta, Botswana.

During 2001 and 2002, blood smears from 37 of 120 fishes belonging to 10 species captured in the Okavango Delta region of Botswana, were found to harbour trypanosomes. These trypanosomes displayed differing staining properties, were morphometrically variable, and ranged in total length from 29.5 to 80.8 microm. Mixed populations of the smaller and larger trypanosomes were found in most fish exa...

Modeling Concepts and Remote Sensing Methods for Sustainable Water Management of the Okavango Delta, Botswana

The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s most fascinating wetland systems. The highly dynamic flooding forms the basis for a multitude of different ecosystems and plant and animal communities. Water scarcity and economical development lead to an increasing pressure on the ecosystem. A hydrological model is being developed to help making management decisions more sustainable by simulating possib...

Occurrence and seasonality of internal parasite infection in elephants, Loxodonta africana, in the Okavango Delta, Botswana

It is known from studies in a wide range of wild and domestic animals, including elephants, that parasites can affect growth, reproduction and health. A total of 458 faecal samples from wild elephants were analysed using a combination of flotation and sedimentation methods. Coccidian oocysts (prevalence 51%), and nematode (77%) and trematode (24%) eggs were found. Species were not identified, t...

The Release of a Captive-Raised Female African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) in the Okavango Delta, Botswana

Wild female elephants live in close-knit matrilineal groups and housing captive elephants in artificial social groupings can cause significant welfare issues for individuals not accepted by other group members. We document the release of a captive-raised female elephant used in the safari industry because of welfare and management problems. She was fitted with a satellite collar, and spatial an...
