Towards prevention of biofilm formation: Ti6Al7Nb modified with nanocomposite layers of chitosan and Ag/Au nanoparticles

Implant-associated infections are the major concern for failure of arthroplasty operations. The functionalisation implant surface can provide solutions to problem by either inhibiting adherence bacteria or introducing a contact-killing mechanism. This work is focused on Ti6Al7Nb biomedical alloy modification involving chemical and plasma activation, followed deposition chitosan layers enhanced with metal nanoparticles. A benign method using as an efficient reducing stabilizing agent was applied produce Au Ag nanoparticles in situ size ca. 20 nm 5 nm, respectively. Piranha solution O2/NH3/Ar were used activation method, while NPs antimicrobial properties, viable alternative antibiotic-based approach. topography submicrometre scale deposited evaluated. Chitosan chitosan–Ag composite showed excellent hydrophilicity, characterised wetting angles below 13°.
