Top–down control on eruptive style at Masaya volcano inferred from melt composition

چکیده

Highly explosive Plinian eruptions of basaltic magma are enigmatic because low melt viscosities should inhibit such eruptive style. Masaya volcano, Nicaragua, is a persistently active system capable wide range styles, from open-conduit lava lake activity to voluminous eruptions; it thus an ideal natural laboratory constrain potential controls on eruption Here we report the major, trace, and volatile (CO2, H2O, S, Cl, F) element composition olivine-, plagioclase- clinopyroxene-hosted inclusions as well matrix glasses ejecta two tephra deposits—the 2.1 ka Triple Layer 1.8 Ticuantepe Lapilli—to test whether pre-eruptive contents degassing history may be linked All samples display relatively narrow largely overlapping basaltic–basaltic andesitic compositional (51.7±1.0 wt.% SiO2, 4.8±0.4 MgO) with similar trace signatures (e.g., Ce/Y=0.82±0.10, Ba/La=74±11). However, show systematic differences in contents, forming distinct groups mean H2O 0.6±0.2 (lava lake), 1.1±0.2 (Masaya Layer), 1.9±0.3 (Ticuantepe Lapilli). Together, these generate broad positive correlations between Cl concentrations, maximum values reaching 920 ppm, 1300 ppm 2.3 wt.%, respectively, which compared typical Central American arc magmas. Magma temperature estimates overlap average at 1115±30 °C, while saturation pressures low, mainly <100 MPa, although only record <31 MPa. These observations reiterate compositionally buffered state volcano's magmatic highlighted by previous work demonstrate that — regardless style all magmas undergo variable, but extensive, pressure. Geohygrometry, gas emissions, H2O/Ce–Ba/La systematics suggest initial, undegassed order 3.9–5.5 wt.%. Our results imply not culprit for events Masaya. Instead, propose vigorous supply modulated top–down manner produce whereby temporary sealing conduit instigate transition behavior. In this model, rapid ascent triggered when seal eventually breaks degassing-induced pressurization, yielding high degrees undercooling, microlite growth, dramatic increase viscosity potential. Turmoil at Turrialba Volcano (Costa Rica): Degassing and eruptive processes inferred from high‐frequency gas monitoring

Eruptive activity at Turrialba Volcano (Costa Rica) has escalated significantly since 2014, causing airport and school closures in the capital city of San José. Whether or not new magma is involved in the current unrest seems probable but remains a matter of debate as ash deposits are dominated by hydrothermal material. Here we use high-frequency gas monitoring to track the behavior of the volc...

Observations of eruptive activity at Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala

The study of active vent dynamics is hindered by the difficulty of directly observing features and processes during eruptive periods. Here, we describe some recent observations of the summit dome activity of Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala, from the vantage point of its parent, Santa Marı́a. We have taken 12 h of digital video of activity over a 3-year period, which includes 28 eruptions and nume...

Perception of a chronic volcanic hazard: persistent degassing at Masaya volcano, Nicaragua

This study takes a combined qualitative and quantitative approach to examining the chronic hazard posed by persistent degassing at Masaya volcano, Nicaragua. The gas is a highly salient threat in communities surrounding Masaya volcano, with the elevated salience level of his invisible hazard deriving from the highly perceptible impacts of the degassing; these include individual and material imp...

Magma Pathways and Their Interactions Inferred from InSAR and Stress Modeling at Nyamulagira Volcano, D.R. Congo

A summit and upper flank eruption occurred at Nyamulagira volcano, Democratic Republic of Congo, from 2–27 January 2010. Eruptions at Nyamulagira during 1996–2010 occurred from eruptive fissures on the upper flanks or within the summit caldera and were distributed along the ~N155E rift zone, whereas the 2011–2012 eruption occurred ~12 km ENE of the summit. 3D numerical modeling of Interferometr...

Comparative soil CO2 flux measurements and geostatistical estimation methods on Masaya volcano, Nicaragua

We present a comparative study of soil CO2 flux (FCO2) measured by five groups (Groups 1-5) at the IAVCEI-CCVG Eighth Workshop on Volcanic Gases on Masaya volcano, Nicaragua. Groups 1-5 measured FCO2 using the accumulation chamber method at 5-m spacing within a 900 m grid during a morning (AM) period. These measurements were repeated by Groups 1-3 during an afternoon (PM) period. All measured F...
