Tomato Seed Coat Permeability: Optimal Seed Treatment Chemical Properties for Targeting the Embryo with Implications for Internal Seed-Borne Pathogen Control

چکیده

Seed treatments are frequently applied for the management of early-season pests, including seed-borne pathogens. However, to be effective against internal pathogens, active ingredient must able penetrate seed coat. Tomato seeds were focus this study, and objectives (1) evaluate three coumarin fluorescent tracers in terms uptake (2) quantify coat permeability relation lipophilicity better elucidate chemical movement tissue. Uptake treated with 1, 120, 151 was assessed by fluorescence microscopy. For quantitative studies, a series 11 n-alkyl piperonyl amides log Kow range 0.02–5.66 applied, two portions, namely, embryo, endosperm + coat, analyzed high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Coumarin 120 lowest 1.3 displayed greater than 1 2.9. In contrast, optimal embryo ranged from 2.9 3.3 derived amide series. Therefore, heterogeneous not suitable determine uptake. Three tomato varieties investigated series, maximum percent recovered embryonic tissue only 1.2% 5%. These data suggest that application ingredients as could result suboptimal concentrations being efficacious.

Parental effects on seed mass: seed coat but not embryo/endosperm effects.

Many biologists studying environmentally induced parental effects have indirectly suggested that the parental environment alters seed mass by altering the amount of endosperm or embryo tissue in the seed. We tested this hypothesis by measuring the effects of parental temperature on total seed mass, seed coat mass, and embryo/endosperm mass in offspring of Plantago lanceolata. Parental temperatu...

Tomato Seed Disinfection with Chlorine

Chlorine is a commonly used disinfectant for tomato seed contaminated with the bacterial pathogens causing canker, spot, and speck diseases. Previous research has attempted to determine chlorine effectiveness by testing for the presence of the pathogen after treatment of infected seed lots. Even with the most advanced techniques, the accuracy of these methods is questionable, and can underestim...

Tomato Seed Coat Permeability to Selected Carbon Nanomaterials and Enhancement of Germination and Seedling Growth

Seed coat permeability was examined using a model that tested the effects of soaking tomato (Solanum lycopersicon) seeds in combination with carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNMs) and ultrasonic irradiation (US). Penetration of seed coats to the embryo by CBNMs, as well as CBNMs effects on seed germination and seedling growth, was examined. Two CBNMs, C60(OH)20 (fullerol) and multiwalled nanotubes ...
