Tiny robots made from biomolecules

چکیده

Can we scale down robots to small scales and realize them with self-organizing molecules? As biological cells already act a little like – they sense, compute, move, respond their environment the answer is probably “yes”. But wide range of interesting physical challenges have be tackled.

Controlling Tiny Multi-Scale Robots for Nerve Repair

We designed and evaluated multiagent control for microscopic robots (“nanorobots”) aiding the surgical repair of damaged nerve cells. This repair operates on both nerves as a whole, at scales of hundreds of microns, and individual nerve cell axons, at scales of about a micron. We match the robots to these sizes using a combination of microelectomechanical (MEMS) machines for the larger operatio...

Building Simple Formations in Large Societies of Tiny Mobile Robots

We envision that in the future lots of tasks that are handled nowadays by few but complex mobile robots will be performed by huge swarms of tiny robots. This way the system becomes more robust against single failures and cheaper, since the robots can be very simple. As a prerequisite, the robots have to be able to form given formations in order to organise their work. We review new strategies t...

Scene Categorization from Tiny Images

Humans can only just recognize images with a geometric resolution of 32× 32 pixels. However, this fact does not mean that it is also possible to assign predefined scene category labels like indoor, outdoor, kitchen or beach to such a tiny image, neither for humans nor for computers. The purpose of our work is to investigate the applicability of common scene categorization methods and the import...

From isolated molecules to biomolecules

We address the dynamics of electronicÈvibrational excited states in isolated molecules, clusters, condensed phase and biosystems, which pertain to the phenomena of energy acquisition, storage and disposal as explored from the microscopic point of view. The advent of femtosecond dynamics opened up new horizons in the exploration of chemical and biophysical processes on the timescale of nuclear m...

Dynamics of Gel Robots made of Electro-Active Polymer Gel

This paper proposes a model for predicting dynamic motions of elastic robots made entirely of electro-active polymer gel. The requirement is that both active and passive deformations be described simultaneously. Active deformations arise from generated stress, while passive deformations are due to external forces, such as gravity and friction. We represent both in the same framework, considerin...
