Time‐Scales of a Dune‐Beach System and Implications for Shoreline Modeling

Understanding the interactions between dune systems and beaches is critical to determining short-term shoreline response long-term resilience. In this study, almost 15 years of monthly beach/dune measurements were analyzed for three different profiles at Vougot Beach, France understand predict changes from intra-annual multi-annual time-scales. Four migration modes: advance/retreat (translation modes) steepening/flattening (rotation identified through a centroid analysis. The analysis showed that translation rotation can occur simultaneously, with trends beach retreat profile steepening (lower retreating upper advancing), which was interrupted by two energetic wave events causing flattening advancing retreating). These observations are evidence how sediment contribution resulting erosion temporarily caused large advance in position. A recent modeling approach accounts time-scales applied changes, showing significant improvements comparison traditional equilibrium model when related recovery considered. results system affects profile evolution both spatially, impacts elevations along cross-shore profile, temporally, periodically redistributing system.
