Tilia sp. Seed Oil—Composition, Antioxidant Activity and Potential Use

Research on new, untapped seed oil sources is receiving increased attention. In this study, 18 different samples of Tilia cordata and platyphyllos from various locations in Slovenia were collected was extracted. The compositions triglyceride fatty acids unsaponifiable compounds determined using GC-MS, while antioxidant activity evaluated the DPPH method. content seeds varied significantly, 9.1% to 21.7%. Linoleic acid (50–60%) found be predominant acid, followed by oleic (18–22%) palmitic (8–9%). Characteristic cyclopropene (sterculic, dihydrosterculic malvalic acids) present average range 4–8.4%. Antioxidant ranged 8.9% 65.5%, higher, average, for T. platyphyllos. Higher closely correlated with higher γ-tocopherol contents. Statistically significant correlations confirmed between γ-tocopherol, Δ-tocopherol phytol, stigmasterol β-sitosterol squalene acid. may great interest cosmetic dermal preparations. It is, however, not considered a good source dietary due undesired, omega-6 acids.
