[Thyrotoxic hypokalemic periodic paralysis. A case report].
Thyrotoxic hypokalemic periodic paralysis is an uncommon complication of thyrotoxicosis, characterized by attacks of generalized muscular weakness associated with hypokalemia in patients with hyperthyroidism, most frequently with Graves-Basedow disease. Treatment with antithyroid drugs and potassium supplements reversed the symptoms and the episodes of acute muscular weakness did not reappear.

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis is a rare and dramatic complication of hyperthyroidism. This series summarizes the clinical and metabolic features of 10 patients who presented to the Western and Sunshine hospitals in Melbourne, Australia, between 1997 and 2002 with thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP). TPP classically presents with proximal lower-limb weakness in the setting of a low potassium le...
متن کاملThyrotoxic Periodic Paralysis Induced by Dexamethasone
Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a disease characterized by sudden onset and muscle paralysis. It occurs in the setting of hypokalemia of thyrotoxicosis. Cases of TPP induced by a glucocorticoid such as prednisolone or methylprednisolone have been reported. We report on two patients, each of whom received a dexamethasone injection and subsequently developed TPP. Both patients experienced ...

Asiatic male patients are most often affected. On the other hand, African descents rarely present this disease. The case described shows an afrodescendant patient with hypokalemia and tetraparesis, whose diagnosis of hyperthyro...
متن کاملSurgical treatment for thyrotoxic hypokalemic periodic paralysis: case report
Thyrotoxic hypokalemic periodic paralysis (THPP) is a rare, potentially life-threatening endocrine emergency. It is characterized by recurrent muscle weakness and hypokalemia. Because many THPP patients do not have obvious symptoms and signs of hyperthyroidism, misdiagnosis may occur. The published studies revealed that definitive therapy for THPP is control of hyperthyroidism by medical therap...
