چکیده

Abstract. Previous studies have indicated that, on a synoptic scale, severe haze in eastern China (EC) is affected by atmospheric circulation variations. However, it still unclear what the dominant patterns influencing winter conditions EC and differences between them are. To systematically determine of different regions EC, we use hierarchical clustering algorithm (HCA) to classify local geopotential height anomalies at 500 hPa over stations with obtained three types based observed particulate matter an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) concentrations NCEP/NCAR reanalysis. Circulation Type1 accompanied significant northerly wind component northern causes pollution Yangtze River valley. Although meteorological are not conducive formation accumulation, valley related transportation caused anomalies. During days Type2, joint affection East Atlantic/West Russia teleconnection pattern Asia subtropical jet stimulate maintain anticyclonic northeast Asia, which provides occurrence whole EC. Type3 mainly events through establishment blocking high Sea Okhotsk. The results provide basis for establishing prediction management policies applicable

Atmospheric circulation patterns which promote winter Arctic sea ice decline

The impact of winter atmospheric blocking over the Ural Mountains region (UB) coincident with different phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on the sea ice variability over the Barents and Kara Seas (BKS) in winter is investigated. It is found that the UB in conjunction with the positive phase of the NAO (NAOþ) leads to the strongest sea ice decline. During this phase composites and t...

Winter Nighttime Temperature Inversions and Their Relationship with the Synoptic-scale Atmospheric Circulation

The present work aims at examining the association of nighttime temperature inversions and synoptic-scale circulation in the Athens basin. Temperature inversions have a direct impact in the diffusion and transport of pollutants, a fact that highlights the importance of investigating their cause effect relationship. For this purpose, randiosonde measurements from the upper-air station in Hellini...

Elucidating severe urban haze formation in China.

As the world's second largest economy, China has experienced severe haze pollution, with fine particulate matter (PM) recently reaching unprecedentedly high levels across many cities, and an understanding of the PM formation mechanism is critical in the development of efficient mediation policies to minimize its regional to global impacts. We demonstrate a periodic cycle of PM episodes in Beiji...
