Threats go both ways in the management of volcanic protected areas

چکیده

Volcanoes are true wonders of the planet. Managers volcanic protected areas face dual challenge protecting landscape from overuse and damage, visitors local residents range geophysical risks presented by activity. Without clear recognition how volcano works, there is potential that risk hazardous conditions (e.g., eruptions, gas emissions, fumarolic activity, landslides, seismic other hazards) may not be adequately addressed in site’s management plan. Two examples illustrate current best practice response to this challenge. at Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument a decision on what civil engineering measures take large lake formed debris avalanche during 1980 eruption poses catastrophic flood flow more than 50,000 downstream residents. Protected Areas in Tropical Africa: Assessing Threats and Conservation Activities

Numerous protected areas (PAs) have been created in Africa to safeguard wildlife and other natural resources. However, significant threats from anthropogenic activities and decline of wildlife populations persist, while conservation efforts in most PAs are still minimal. We assessed the impact level of the most common threats to wildlife within PAs in tropical Africa and the relationship of con...

Population dynamics and threats to an apex predator outside protected areas: implications for carnivore management

Data on the population dynamics and threats to large carnivores are vital to conservation efforts, but these are hampered by a paucity of studies. For some species, such as the leopard (Panthera pardus), there is such uncertainty in population trends that leopard trophy hunting has been banned in South Africa since 2016 while further data on leopard abundance are collected. We present one of th...

Marine protected areas and ocean basin management

1. All reserve designs must be guided by an understanding of natural history and habitat variability. 2. Differences in scale and predictability set aside highly dynamic pelagic systems from terrestrial and nearshore ecosystems, where wildlife reserves were first implemented. Yet, as in static systems, many pelagic species use predictable habitats to breed and forage. Marine protected areas (MP...
