Thinking Households—How Resident Conceptualisations of Waste, Reclaimers and Separation at Source Shape Recycling Practices

چکیده

Abstract Municipalities across the globe are implementing separation at source programmes to reduce waste sent landfills. Yet typically, significant numbers of households do not participate. This article contributes debates on reasons for low S@S participation rates through comparative analysis in Johannesburg’s first programme by residents low-income, predominantly black suburb Newlands and high-income, white area Franklin Roosevelt Park. The argues that how conceptualised waste, reclaimers (waste pickers) influenced whether they separated their recyclables what did with them. Class (which is articulated race) played an important role, as while some each revalued via routes other than official Pikitup programme, those Park tended separate reclaimers, were more likely sell augment incomes or reuse them need new purchases. These practices quantities diverted from landfill invisible Pikitup, which only recognised materials its pilot. findings highlight necessity expanding conceptualisations include these additional revaluation if we develop contextually appropriate capture accurate data diversion In addition, interventions transform residents’ conceptualisation so it excludes items retain value could facilitate greater this expanded form source.

Knowledge, attitudes and practices on household food waste: Bases for formulation of a recycling system

This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes and practices on food waste of selected households in the northern province of the Philippines. The results of the assessment were used as bases for formulation of a recycling system. A total of one hundred rural households were selected using stratified equal allocation sampling technique. Data were collected through the use of researcher-made quest...

E - Waste Recycling by Electrostatic Separation

This chapter discusses the problem of Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) as one of the largest growing waste streams globally, the influence of the product complexity and liberation in separation, and the basics of electrostatic separation. A very short review of mechanical separation processes is given and research conducted on one fraction of CRT TV set is presented. A CRT TV set ...

A Procedure to Transform Recycling Behavior for Source Separation of Household Waste

Household waste separation at the source is a central part of waste management systems in Sweden. Resource recovery of materials and energy increased substantially after separate collection was implemented in the 1990s. A procedure to transform recycling behavior for the sorting of household waste—called the recycling behavior transition (RBT) procedure—was designed and implemented in a waste m...

A hybrid metaheuristic algorithm for solving a rollon–rolloff waste collection vehicle routing problem considering waste separation and recycling center

This paper addresses a rollon–rolloff waste collection vehicle routing problem which involves large containers that collect huge amounts of waste from construction sites and shopping malls. In this problem, vehicles could only move one container at a time between customers’ locations, a depot, a disposal center, and a recycling center site. Other than a disposal center, a recycling ...
